You are trusting us with words that matter, sometimes the last words you will ever leave for someone. We take that seriously. Here is exactly what we promise, in plain language.
1. Your letters are private
Every letter is encrypted before it is stored. Our systems only unlock a letter to show it to you, or to deliver it to the person you chose. We do not read your letters, we do not sell them, and we never use them for advertising or to train anything.
2. Your letters are kept safe
Your letters are stored encrypted and backed up so a single failure cannot lose them. We keep our backups in more than one place and hold the keys separately from the data.
3. We deliver on the trigger you set
Whether you choose a specific date, a milestone birthday, an event your recipient confirms, or a letter for after you are gone, we work to deliver it at the right moment. If a delivery ever fails, we tell you, and we keep trying rather than giving up quietly. If an email address stops working, we let you know so you can correct it.
4. Closing your account never destroys a letter you left for someone else
If you delete your account, we remove your personal data and your own private drafts, but any letters you scheduled for other people are still delivered exactly as you arranged. If you have letters for after you're gone, you choose whether we keep them, and keep checking in with you, or delete them. We will never silently discard a letter you left for a loved one.
5. You can always take your words with you
Your letters are yours. You can print or save a copy of every letter you've written at any time from My letters, and ask us for a full copy of your account through our help page.
6. If Milestone Vault ever has to close
We intend to be here for the long term. But if we ever had to shut the service down, we promise to:
- give advance notice to everyone with letters stored with us;
- give you the chance to export or receive your letters before anything is closed; and
- do everything we reasonably can to deliver or return the letters entrusted to us.
What we deliberately do not promise
We will not pretend to guarantee delivery in every possible circumstance, or promise a fixed number of decades no company can honestly commit to. Email addresses change, and events beyond anyone's control can happen. What we promise instead is honesty, real backups, and our very best effort to honour every letter you leave with us, for as long as we are here.
This page describes our commitments in plain language. For the full legal terms, see our Terms & Conditions and Privacy Policy.
